Formed as the Department of Interior Design in 1994, the department was then renamed as the Department of Space Design in 1999, and finally as the Department of Architecture, following the international trend in this field, and to aid students in career planning. The Graduate School of Media Space Design was founded in 2004; then reformed in 2007, as the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Disaster Management. In 2009, for a better and complete long-term research vision, the Graduate School was encompassed as a Master’s Program in Architecture within the Department of Architecture. Currently, the department has 10 full-time and 30 part-time faculty members, all with extensive educational backgrounds and significant practical experiences. All faculty not only actively participate in academic conferences and publications, but throw themselves into industry-academy cooperation program enthusiastically. Thus, all students benefit greatly from the combination of theories and practice. The major feature of this program is creativity, that is, original creation of living space design which is based on technology, history and theory, presentation and computing, as well as environment and culture. The program emphasizes innovative and contemporary design to train students for occupational foundations and for further study. Within this 5-year undergraduate program, each class cohort has 55 students enrolled; while 8 students are enrolled in each cohort of the graduate program. Located on the fifth floor of the Design Building, a unique professional studio is available for each cohort. Surrounded by a creative and chic atmosphere, students are willing to open up to embrace their education and campus lives. Students are encouraged to take part in all kinds of design competitions domestically or internationally to broaden their horizons and learn more from each experience. Frequent field trips also cultivate more up-close and personal observation for each student while they enjoy themselves in the design resources and historical contexts of each building and place they tour. Moreover, the department frequently holds international seminars, inviting world renowned architects or scholars to offer different perspectives to students and faculty alike.
